In honor of Bob Marley’s 70th birthday today, I decided to post this video of his son Julian Marley playing “Redemption Song” on the plaza in Barcelona, Spain I lived on for a few months during the Spanish Revolution. The lyrics to this song are so powerful for the setting that he played in because they synchronize so perfectly with the reasoning for the revolution there in the first place.

“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
‘Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it’s just a part of it,
We’ve got to fulfill de book.

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have,
Redemption songs,
Redemption songs,
Redemption songs.”
